Η Acheulean / Αχελαία περίοδος είναι μια ιδιαίτερη πολιτισμική / λιθοτεχνική περίοδος της Παλαιότερης Παλαιολιθικής περιόδου.
Πήρε την ονομασία της από τον οικισμό Saint-Acheul της Γαλλίας, όπου το πρώτον εντοπίστηκαν και χαρακτηρίστηκαν αυτά τα τέχνεργα.
Αχελαία εργαλεία βρέθηκαν στην Αφρική, στην Ευρώπη, την Εγγύς Ανατολή και την κεντρική Ασία μέχρι την Καλκούτα της Ινδίας. Συνήθως συναντώνται με λείψανα του Homo erectus.
Η αχελαία τεχνολογία αναπτύχθηκε πριν από περίπου 1.760.000 χρόνια και έληξε περίπου πριν από 150.000 χρόνια.
Το πιο χαρακτηριστικό αχελαίο εργαλείο είναι ο «αμυγδαλόσχημος χειροπέλεκυς με διπλή συμμετρία», κατασκευασμένος από πυριτόλιθο.
