The book «Erosion and Conservation of Stone» by V. Lampropoulos contains in the first chapter geological and
mineralogical data, relatively to the basic structure material of the monuments
and sculptures, the stones, and methods of mining, transportation, sculpturing
and construction, from the antiquity till today.
In the second
chapter, the types of erosion of these stones, due to humidity, atmospheric
pollution, biological depositions, temperature variation and previous
procedures of conservation are presented.
In the third
chapter, data of conservation and restoration of stone monuments and sculptures
are extensively described: analysis of structure material of the monuments,
cleaning of the surfaces, consolidation of the surfaces, joining-adhesion of
the fragments, completion of lost parts and final retouching of the monument
and statue.
