Megalithomaniac Hugh Newman explores the Antequera Dolmens in Andalusia, Spain.
The Viera Chamber (discovered by the Viera brothers in 1903) is the smaller one with a tiny chamber at the end. The Menga Dolmen, on the other hand, is gigantic, with an 180 ton block making up its roof. At the back of this giant dolmen, in the centre of the floor, is a 30 m deep well perfectly carved from the bedrock and with water at its bottom. Thought to be built in the 3rd Millenium BC, their origins are still unclear. The chambers look out on to “Lovers Rock” (Peña de los Enamorados), a recumbent simulacra of a face, the axis-mundi of the area. The El Romeral Dolmen is a few km away that will feature in an upcoming video.
