με την Ελλάδα, δεν ήταν εγγυημένη στο τέλος του Β΄ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου.
Από τον Απρίλιο του 1945 έως
την υπογραφή της ειρηνευτικής συνθήκης μεταξύ Ελλάδας και Ιταλίας το 1947, τα
Δωδεκάνησα ήταν υπό την δικαιοδοσία της Βρετανικής Στρατιωτικής Διοίκησης. Τον
Απρίλιο του 1945, ο γραμματέας της Διοίκησης ενημέρωσε το Υπουργείο Εξωτερικών
Υποθέσεων στην Αυστραλία ότι «ήταν πάντα η πρόθεσή μας όλα τα νησιά – με την
εξαίρεση του Καστελλόριζου – να πάνε στην Ελλάδα μετά τον Πόλεμο».
Η σθεναρή υποστήριξη υπέρ της
(επαν)ένταξης του Καστελλόριζου στην Ελλάδα, έγινε από τον δρ. Herbert Evatt,
αναπληρωτή πρωθυπουργό και υπουργό Εξωτερικών της Αυστραλίας, ο οποίος υποστήριξε
τις ελληνικές εδαφικές αξιώσεις στα Ηνωμένα Έθνη, και άνοιξε τον δρόμο για
στενότερους δεσμούς μεταξύ Αυστραλίας και Ελλάδας.
Η Αυστραλία υποστήριξε επίσης
το αίτημα της Ελλάδας για μεγαλύτερη αποζημίωση από την Ιταλία, για ζημιές που
υπέστη κατά την διάρκεια του πολέμου.
Όταν εν τέλει το Καστελλόριζο
ξανα-ενώθηκε επισήμως με την Ελλάδα, το 1948, μόνον 663 άτομα παρέμεναν στο
νησί, για να γιορτάσουν ξανά την ελληνική τους υπηκοότητα…

Unification of Kastellorizo with Greece was not guaranteed at the end of
World War II.
From April 1945 until the signing of the peace treaty between Greece and
Italy in 1947, the Dodecanese was under the jurisdiction of the British
Military Administration. In April 1945, the Secretary of the Administration
notified the External Affairs Department in Australia that ‘it has always been
our intention that all islands with the possible exception of Castellorizo
should go to Greece after the war’. Australian officialdom wanted further
clarification, and so came a reply stating that no decision about the future of
the islands had been reached and that the British awaited the peace settlement.
The Turkish government soon expressed concern to British authorities about the
fate of the islands. The Dodecanese islands were very close to Turkey, and
therefore important to Turkish security. Furthermore, they claimed that
‘Castellorizo, [too], really belonged to Turkey [but they] handed it over to
Italy in 1923’.
In the meantime, Dr Herbert (Doc) Evatt, Australia’s Deputy Prime
Minister and Minister for External Affairs, who had played a pivotal role in
the formation of the United Nations and the drafting of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights, took up the plight of Kastellorizo in
international negotiations. He was able to help convince the Council of Foreign
Ministers that Kastellorizo and the entire Dodecanese should be unified with
Greece.
Kastellorizians in Evatt’s electorate of Barton reportedly lobbied him
to press Greece’s claim, and Evatt did just that. It has also been suggested
that, while in New York, Evatt argued that it was‘imperative’ for Kastellorizo
to be ceded to Greece with the rest of the islands of the Dodecanese. The
Council of Foreign Ministers accepted this cession in June 1946.
Dr Evatt’s support of Greek territorial claims in the United Nations
opened the way for closer ties between Australia and Greece. In 1945 Norman
Makin, the Australian Acting Minister for External Affairs ‘received a cable
from the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Athens, paying a high tribute and
expressing the deep gratitude of the Greek people to Dr. H.V. Evatt, who, as a
worthy spokesman of Australia in London, supported the rights of Greece.’
Evatt’s support was also instrumental to Greek claims over the island of
Kastellorizo, part of the Dodecanese islands situated in the Aegean that had
been under Italian control. Australia also supported Greece’s request for a
larger reparation payment from Italy for damage inflicted upon it during the
war.
The adjoining photograph, seemingly taken at the Embassy Ballroom, shows
Perth’s Kastellorizian community belatedly celebrating the end of the war and
the 1946 decision for Kastellorizo to be unified with Greece. In the
background, the Greek flag can be seen alongside that of Britain and the United
States. When Kastellorizo was officially united with Greece in 1948, only 663
people remained on the island to celebrate Greek citizenship.
